On Friday 23 February, Madrid hosted the meeting of the Loss Adjuster's Committee of the International Association of Agricultural Production Insurers (AIAG), of which Agroseguro has held the presidency since 2018.
The meeting was opened by Sergio de Andrés, director general of Agroseguro, who welcomed the members of the Committee, professionals from insurance companies in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Israel, Poland, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United States and Spain, as well as from ALASA (Latin American Association for the Development of Agricultural Production Insurance). During his speech, Agroseguro's director general stressed the importance – in the current context of climate change – of international collaboration to enhance the quality of claims assessment, by sharing synergies and experiences of highly developed and long-established agricultural insurance systems, such as Spain's, with those countries that have systems that are still developing.
During the meeting, the AIAG's Loss Adjuster's Committee made progress on organising the next annual loss adjuster's seminars and shared different experiences on the present and future challenges faced in assessing agricultural damage.
In the case of Spain, Agroseguro shared the management carried out to assess the damages recorded during 2023, with a particular reference to that resulting from the drought. The severe lack of rainfall suffered last year, together with high temperatures, hail storms and frost, resulted in more than 3.5 million hectares of damage, the highest figure in the history of agricultural insurance, accounting for 58% of the total insured area.
This large management and appraisal effort has been the most difficult challenge faced by the Spanish Combined Agrarian Insurance system in its 43-year history, and has been viewed very positively by policyholders in the satisfaction surveys that are regularly carried out.
