The International Association of Agricultural Production Insurers (AIAG) held its annual experts' seminar on appraising damage to agricultural production from 30 August to 1 September. This meeting was held in Berlin (Germany) and focused on the appraisal of storm and drought damage on corn crops.
In total, the working sessions brought together 167 participants from 21 different countries, which was a record number of participants, adding seven more nationalities than the one held in Switzerland in 2022 that focused on strawberry and red fruit production, and which was also attended by Agroseguro. This time, agricultural insurance experts from numerous European Union countries (Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Lithuania, etc.), as well as from Switzerland, Turkey and South Africa travelled to Germany.
One of the main points of the work programme consisted of an appraisal day on a corn farm with simulated drought damage at different stages of crop development, although the participants also took the opportunity to appraise real damage caused by the wind and hail storms that occurred in Berlin at the end of July. Afterwards, the different international working groups shared the results of the appraisals carried out, analysing the fundamental aspects to be taken into account and the main difficulties encountered when appraising the damage.
Agroseguro's involvement
Agroseguro played an active role in the Seminar, contributing Spain's key experience in agricultural insurance, specifically in the insurance of corn crops. The head of the Studies Department, Almudena Guijarro, and two professionals from its regional offices were present in Berlin: Mari Luz Cano, territorial director of the Northern zone, and Valeriano Fernandez, coordinator of the Levante zone. Joining them were Elsa Sánchez, head of international relations and president – since 2018 and on behalf of Agroseguro – of the AIAG Expert Loss Adjusters' Committee, the body responsible for the technical coordination of these annual seminars, as well as for promoting the exchange of experiences related to appraising damage between the different member countries.
