During the last days of October, an exceptionally intense DANA crossed the peninsula, resulting in fatalities and other personal injuries, in addition to considerable material damage. Firstly, Agroseguro wishes to express its condolences to the families and relatives of the victims and show solidarity and support to all those affected.
In the agricultural sector, this phenomenon has caused major damage, specifically on 29 October, and above all in the Valencian Community (with a notable intensity in the province of Valencia), although it has also affected the province of Albacete, the Region of Murcia and Andalusia (specifically, Almeria). To a lesser degree of intensity, some damage also occurred on 30 October in the western part of Andalusia and in the north-eastern part of the peninsula (Aragon and Catalonia).
Agroseguro would like to point out that all risks associated with this DANA are included under the Spanish Combined Agricultural Insurance system.
Although still too early to know the exact economic impact that this DANA may occasion to agriculture or livestock, the first impression is that it is a very exceptional weather event, which far exceeds those recorded in recent years. The extremely intense storm activity has been associated with torrential rainfall and extraordinarily severe downpours that caused rivers and streams to burst their banks and flood, accompanied by hailstorms and strong winds that even caused tornadoes to form.
The DANA has severely affected crops being harvested. Damage to persimmon, citrus fruit and some vegetables in the Valencian Community; citrus fruit and vegetables in the Region of Murcia; vegetables in the province of Albacete; and citrus fruit and vegetables, including those grown in polytunnels, in Almeria. Damage may also have been caused to wood in woody crops, as well as to livestock farms.
Claims will begin to be received once the insured farmers and livestock farmers have been able to access their farms and confirm the damage caused by the storms. In any event, in light of the seriousness of the events, Agroseguro is sending a message of calm to insured parties, as the claim reports can be sent after several days.
Measures to assist insured parties
To assist those affected by the DANA and to resolve any doubts that may arise, Agroseguro has reinforced its assistance teams for insurance parties, which can be contacted through several communications channels:
Agroseguro has already begun to plan the damage assessment work in the affected areas, which will begin once the water has receded, and which will be carried out by technicians from different areas of the national territory.
Agroseguro reaffirms its commitment to being close to customers and, once the damage assessments have been carried out, it will speed up the payment of compensation so as to do so as quickly as possible and thereby provide liquidity to the affected farmers and livestock farmers.
